It is important to recognise and acknowledge the role of parents in early child care programme from planning, to the evaluation, financing and its operation. Parents have to be empowered with new knowledge and skills relevant to child rearing. This is the only way that some traditional child rearing practices which are harmful to the child can be discontinued. Parents need to understand that children do not just grow in size, they develop, evolve and mature, by learning more complex concepts of the people and objects and the environment. The process of child development is holistic and requires appropriate stimulation. Posters of messages on child stimulation for Education and Development (CSED) were developed to emphasise positive child rearing practices e.g. talking, reading, loving, and playing with young children.
Parents must also know and respect the rights of the child. These include the rights to care, provision of food and shelter, education and protection. aChildren should not be exposed to danger and abuse by their parents, who in the process of sending them out as hawkers unknowingly expose them to danger and abuse.
Training also includes the importance of anthology, toy construction, health, nutrition, sanitation and personal hygiene.
