Available statistics show that only 49% of rural population in Nigeria are served with safe water, while only 32% have access to adequate sanitation. The urban dwellers who have access to safe water and sanitation are 58% and 50% respectively. Personal hygiene which is primarily concerned with personal habits is closely linked with safe water and stool disposal facility. The streams still remain the major sources of water for the household.
Also, 80% of mothers bathe their children, twice a day, while 90% use chemical (alum) to purify the water used for preparing complimentary food for their children, However, this does not prevent diarrhoea, as the water still contains disease germs which causes diarrhoea and other water-borne diseases. These constitute the major causes of diarrhoea and other water-borne disease.
